NOTEWORTHY: Tyler Perry’s Newest Idea — The Obama Love Story? March 19, 2008
Posted by Issa Rae in Black Film News.add a comment
First, Will Smith jokes with Obama about potentially playing him in a biopic, and now Tyler Perry wants to make a movie about the love between Michelle and Obama? Tyler Perry recently opened up about his latest idea:
I’m writing it right now. I’ve told Reuben about it. It’s just an amazing story. I was just watching him in the debate with Hillary and meeting him and Michelle and having dinner with them. They just inspired this amazing story. It’s a love story with a little political twist but it’s mostly about…it’s called “For the Love of You” and it’s about his love for his woman. It’s going to be amazing. If they won’t do it, then I’ll have to do it with somebody.

NEWS: Notorious B.I.G/Biggie Smalls Character Cast along with Angela Bassett, Derek Luke and Anthony Mackie for Biopic March 7, 2008

(from Eurweb.com)
The months-long search for an actor to play the late Notorious B.I.G. in Fox Searchlight’s upcoming biopic “Notorious” has ended with the casting of Brooklyn-based rapper Jamal “Gravy” Woolard.
Two years ago, the budding MC made headlines after he did a radio interview at New York hip-hop station Hot 97 moments after he was shot outside of the building. Like Biggie, Woolard sold drugs before he picked up the mic. He had released a number of albums on indie labels in the 1990s before being signed by Warner Bros.
“Finding BIG was a task in itself and I’m honored that so many young men came out to audition for the role,” said the rapper’s mother, Voletta Wallace. “However, it was Jamal’s charming personality, warm spirit, wonderful sense of humor and beautiful smile that won my heart. He is a talented and charismatic actor and I am excited that he will bring Christopher’s character to the big screen.”

NOTEWORTHY: AOL Blackvoices Lists Top 50 Black Movies of All Time March 6, 2008
Posted by Issa Rae in Black Film News.2 comments
The AOL Black Voices staff along with help from black film critics and noted members of the media have looked at over 50 years of black films and come up with what they believe are the top 50 Black Films of all time. From ‘growing up in the hood’ fare like ‘Boyz N’ The Hood’ and the tour-de-force performance of the great Dorothy Dandridge in ‘Carmen Jones,’ to perennial classics like ‘The Color Purple,’ homage is paid. To make the list, these movies needed either a primarily black cast or a black lead character around whom the story revolved. So, a classic like ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ did not make the list because the film dealt primarily with the white family’s reaction to Sidney’s character rather than focusing in on him.
Check out what films made the cut here.
